Mona Vale restoration ‘sentimental’ for Gough „„ By Caitlin Miles TEN YEARS ago Jamie Gough held his 21st celebrations at Mona Vale Homestead and his mother, Helen, donated a park bench in his name. Yesterday, the city councillor was back to cut the ribbon, for the opening of the historic building. Originally built in 1899, the homestead had to be restored after the September 4, 2010, and February 22, 2011, earthquakes, severely damaged it. The link to the homestead goes as far back as Cr Gough’s greatgrandfather. Tracy Thomas Gough, purchased the property in the 1930s and later sold it. He added the guest house at the west entrance and offered it free of charge to the city council as a place of residence for visiting dignitaries. Cr Gough’s parents got engaged and had their wedding reception at the homestead, while earlier this year Cr Gough had his wedding photos taken in the grounds. With a long-standing family connection to the property, Cr Gough said it was a “sentimental day. “It was very special to open my great-grandfather’s home. I think

Jamie Gough if he had been here today he would have been pretty chuffed,’’ he said. Restoration work was carried out on the fernery, bathhouse, and lodge as part of the $2.8 million project. Different parts of the grounds and buildings have been completed at various times, with the homestead being the second to last part of the project to be completed. The gatehouse is still being restored.

Tuesday November 29 2016 FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

IT WAS especially poignant for city councillor Jamie Gough when he, alongside Mayor Lianne Dalziel, opened the Mona Vale Homestead yesterday (front page). Not only did his family own the homestead up until the 1960s, but he held his 21st birthday there (his mother even bought him a park bench in the grounds as a present). And earlier this year, it also served as the backdrop for his wedding photos. The earthquakes have shattered so much of our heritage, so it is marvellous to see the restoration project of the Mona Vale Homestead finally completed. There are a few things at Mona Vale still to be completed, including the gatehouse, but, step-by-step, it is returning. Hei kona, Shelley Robinson

Competition brings old boy home

By Fleur Mealing A LAST-MINUTE entry has meant one lucky old boy will be able to return home from across the world, thanks to his older brother. Thomas Moore will be able to join his brother Luke in the St Andrew’s College centenary gala weekend after his brother won him a free flight home from the United Kingdom. The brothers, who attended the school from years 1 to 13, will celebrate with hundreds of other former students to mark the school’s special birthday in March. To mark the occasion, St Andrew’s held the competition, Bring an Old Col Home, which encouraged former students to send in photos to win a free return trip from anywhere in the world. The school received 89 entries into the competition from alumni hoping to see their family and friends again. The competition was sponsored by Emirates and House of Travel Merivale. To win, Luke entered a photo of Thomas on his birthday. Luke said he wasn’t sure how Thomas would ever match

him when his birthday rolled around. The brothers are ecstatic to be reunited again after a year apart. Thomas, 25, moved to London in 2014 for a chance to see the world. He currently works there as a business consultant. The trip home means a lot to

Thomas. “It is special as STAC was a huge part of my life for so long and I’m looking forward to sharing in the centenary celebrations,” he said. House of Travel Merivale representative Annie Crombie said: “This experience will give Thomas the opportunity

to visit family, catch up with Old Cols and see the progress at St Andrew’s and here in Christchurch, which will be wonderful.” Most importantly, the trip will provide Thomas a chance to eat a few well-missed steak and cheese pies before returning to the UK.

Harcourts helps families over Christmas HARCOURTS Holmwood is about to help less fortunate families by collecting for Christchurch City Mission. The team at the agency is seeking non-perishable food items, blankets and toiletries for the city mission’s food bank to be delivered in time for Christmas. Harcourts Holmwood chief executive Tony Jenkins said it is an unfortunate reality that the city mission experiences its own Christmas rush, as already struggling families are hit with additional financial and emotional stress. “Supporting the mission with (the) donation of food and other useful household items is one easy way everybody can give back to help out our community,” he said. In 2015, the city mission gave out 25,058 food parcels to 6849 families; 21 per cent of those families had never presented to the mission before. This increase has become an annual trend since the 2011 earthquake. Those wishing to contribute can drop off non-perishable items to any Harcourts Holmwood office or phone 351 3002 for collection.

Builder’s award for

FENDALTON: This Form Builders Ltd house won the New Home $650,000-$1 million category.

CLEARWATER: A stunning home by Metzger Builders Ltd which was a finalist in the New Home $1 million-$2 million category.

A home in St Albans is something to “be proud of” according to judges at the Registered Master Builders Home of the Year awards evening. The home was one of three in the north-west of the city to win awards. The St Albans property was built by Casa Construction and won the Builder’s Own Home Award. Judges said while the home was built on a “constricted site,” it displays professionalism and design in the construction of the threebedroom, two-bathroom and two-living room home. A Redwood home, built by Milestone Homes Canterbury, won the PlaceMakers New Home $400,000-$500,000 category, which judges thought was a “well-planned” and designed three-bedroom, two-bathroom and two-living room home. A Fendalton home, built by Form Builders Ltd, won the Nulook New Home $650,000-$1 million. The two-bedroom, two-bathroom, two-living room home was awarded for its varying height, texture, light and shade. Two homes in Clearwater, a home in Fendalton and one in Merivale were also finalists in several categories.

REDWOOD: An affordable Redwood house from Milestone Homes Canterbury won the New Home $400,000-$500,000 category.

Courtney McGregor

Olympic gymnast beaming to Courtney McGregor, 18, caught the nation’s attention at the Rio Olympics. Fraser Walker-Pearce talked to the gymnast about how she found out she had been selected for Rio, the United States college system and what it’s like to be back home in Halswell again Hi Courtney, you’ve had an incredible year by any stretch of the imagination. What was it like competing at the Olympics? The Olympics was amazing. It was a lot of hard work to get there in the first place and I just hoped I’d be there, so to get on the team was amazing. We were aiming for top 16 and I managed 13th and had no major mistakes so that was pretty awesome. How long has it been a dream of yours to compete at the Olympics? Oh wow, for a long time. Definitely from a really young age – from maybe six or seven. I always thought I’d go to the Olympics. I always just assumed TOP GYMNAST: Courtney McGregor is back in Halswell visiting family after representing New Zealand at the Rio Olympics. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN

I’d go as kids do. I figured out as time went on that it was a little harder than I initially thought it was. And when did you actually think it was possible to become an Olympic athlete? I think it was at the 2015 worlds’ competition – I did better than anyone thought. I think probably after that test event, I had to get a certain all-round score and, when I got that, I thought that it could be a possibility, but I still had to get a lot checked off. I still remember the call we got from the GymSport New Zealand chief executive officer; he told us we weren’t allowed to tell anyone and we had to Facetime (video call) him to find out whether I was in or out. He called my mum and he told us I was going. I was only allowed to tell my immediate family and it was at least three or four days walking around telling my school mates that I didn’t know

yet before I could tell people. That must have been hard! What happened after you were selected for the team? I got flown up to Auckland where they announced the gymnastics team, all of us were announced. There was a lot of media there that day and we must have each told our life story about 10 times. Talking to other Christchurch gymnasts, they were all excited to hear you were on your way back from college in the United States. How do you handle being a role model for younger gymnasts? It’s pretty cool I think and kind of surreal. I went into the Christchurch School of Gymnastics and all the wee kids were all excited and happy to see me, which was cool. Then I went over to Olympia (Gymnastic Sports) to see a friend who is a coach there and I saw her little girls and they were all excited as well.

be back home in Christchurch You’re home at the moment, but when that’s finished will you head back to the United States? Yes. At the moment, I’m based over at Boise State University in the US on a gymnastics scholarship. So that starts back up in January, so I’ll be heading back over there soon. It’s all about working with their gym team and I’m definitely hoping to be representing New Zealand at some events in the next year or so. What big competitions are you looking forward to in both college and New Zealand next year? Next year there is the 2017 worlds in Montreal, Canada, which is kind of close to where I am. And also the Commonwealth Games in 2018. But I think that might interfere with some of the college events. So you might miss the Commonwealth Games? That’s a bit annoying? It’s just that it coincides with the college gymnastics season; they always have regionals and nationals and that kind of thing at the end of their season so it might clash.

FULL OF FOCUS: Courtney McGregor represented New Zealand at the Rio Olympics. Her best result was 13th in the vault.

What was seeing younger gymnasts at your old club like? It was pretty special. It’s kind of crazy that I now inspire the younger kids when I was in their shoes a few years ago. Some clubs haven’t had the most successful events recently, but they’ve got good programmes in place and I think they’ll be doing fine soon. Tell me a bit about the young kids’ reactions to seeing you?

Some were really shy when they came up, but some were really confident. So it was quite funny seeing their reactions and quite cool that they look up to me. And are you studying a subject over at Boise State as well? Yes, I’m doing a lot of studying on general things, but I’m also doing health science. The set up is kind of different over there as

compared to in New Zealand. So are you aiming to become a doctor or a surgeon or something like that? I’m not 100 per cent sure yet, but I might want to be a doctor. There’s so many schools over here, I really don’t know which ones are the best for studying to be a doctor. In terms of your scholarship, what does that cover for you? It’s a full scholarship for all schooling, housing and everything. It’s pretty good to be honest. What are the big differences between schools in Christchurch and in America? I think the main difference is the amount of sports and competitions there are over here. The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) system competitions are everywhere and a lot of people go to college for their sport rather than going to get an education because it’s so expensive. There’s also a lot of scholarships available. What school did you attend when you were in Christchurch? I was at Villa Maria College for most of it and I did correspondence for the last

THE RUSSLEY VILLAGE

couple (of years). I think that school is more important than gymnastics, as it was my top priority and correspondence allowed me to get on with my work and then I had time to do gym after. It just cut out all of the assemblies and hour-long lunch times and that kind of thing – it really worked for me. So you’re back at home with your family now? Where are they based? Yes I am. I’m out in Halswell with all the family which is great. Did you get to meet quite a few famous people while you were over in Rio and at college? Yes definitely. Even in Rio I got to meet all the final five gymnasts and Simone Biles (all-round vault and floor gold medalist from the US) and everyone like that and I get to seem them sometimes because most of them are in college gymnastics now. When we were in Rio, we trained with them all; we were in the same part of the Olympic Village as the American team which was great. Do you keep in touch with a few of them? Yes, we talk over social media sometimes which is nice.

SCHOOLS Dads of Fendalton Open-air pupils took a day off work recently to spend a day at school with their children. Every year at Fendalton Open-air, the school opens its doors to its pupils’ dads for a day they call read, feed and speed. Year three team leader Deborah Davids said hundreds of dads, granddads, uncles, big brothers and family friends attended on the day and were welcomed by the school’s kapa haka group. “Fathers spent time reading with and to their children, enjoyed a sausage sizzle and a fun, and at times very competitive, game of football,” she said. “The children love it and fathers take time off work for what is a great celebration of sharing learning and enjoying sportsmanship together.”

LISTENING INTENTLY: Left to right: Jeremy Kaywah reads to his daughters Mei-Xing, Ngahuia and Ate Vaitai.

BIG CHANCE: The day finished with an “at times competitive” game of football, dads against kids.

DAD TIME: Simon Wheeler reads a book on Olympic athletes with his son Otis

LEARNING TO SAVE LIVES: After a Belfast pupil got medical assistance for his grandmother recently, St John went to his school to teach pupils CPR. Zack noticed something wasn’t right about his grandma after she had a fall and insisted his family call for medical assistance. His instinct was right, as ongoing care for his grandma was needed. Heaton makes school cricket history HEATON Normal Intermediate made cricket history last week becoming the first school to win both the National Primary School Cup and Shield in the same year. The school also had two players receive honours, with captain Harry Forrest named tournament MVP in the boys’ cup competition and Georgia Edge named MVP in the girls’ shield. The Heaton boys got the week off to the perfect start with a thrilling final day win in the cup competition last Wednesday. Taking on the top five other schools from around the country at Lincoln University over three days, Heaton boys emerged as the early favourites after day one. In their first game, Heaton accounted for Wellington’s Raroa Normal Intermediate by 36 runs. Forrest scored 94 to help Heaton through to 170 from 20 overs before dismissing Raroa for 134. Heaton made easy work of their next two games against Cambridge’s St Peter’s School and Dunedin’s Tahuna Normal Intermediate before falling to a six-wicket loss to Auckland’s King’s School in the fourth round. Going into the final round of play, King’s only needed victory to be crowned champions.

However, they were rolled for just 46 in a nine-wicket loss to Raroa. The door was left wide open for Heaton, which were more than happy to account for Huntly School, from Marton, by eight wickets and take the title. It was then the turn of the Heaton girls. They were looking to win back-to-back titles and a fourth crown in five years. They started the tournament with opening day wins against Havelock North Intermediate and Tauranga Normal Intermediate. Day two was crucial for Heaton girls, as they took on two previously undefeated sides. The morning started with a five-wicket win over Oamaru’s Weston Primary School before taking on Auckland’s Viscount School which also had three wins from three games. Batting first, Heaton scored 152 from 20 overs. Lucy Murray top scored with 57, while Georgia Edge chipped in with a handy 40 not out from as many deliveries. Edge was then instrumental with the ball, taking a wicket and going for just seven runs from her four overs. Viscount were restricted to 118, handing Heaton a 34-run victory. Heaton girls’ wrapped up the title with a final-day victory over Raroa on Bert Sutcliffe Oval.

SPORTS

CHAMPIONS: Heaton Normal Intermediate’s boys (above right) and girls’ teams won the National Primary School Cup and Shield respectively. Georgia Edge (left) was the MVP in the shield competition.

Experts restore that

“winning smile” MEETING PEOPLE for the first time, interacting with others on social occasions, going for a job interview - in all these situations your smile is the most important part of you. Or perhaps, on a lighter note, you might be scaring yourself with your ‘selfie’ because your smile is not as attractive as it should be, due to missing or broken teeth. Perhaps it’s time for a visit to Denture South in Barrington, where the experts can give you that winning smile back. Clinical dental technician, Andrew Johnson and associate Janice ling can provide you with a highly personalised experience. We have a lot of knowledge and experience that can help guide you through the process. For people who have had dentures for a while and are finding they frequently need to buy denture adhesive to keep them in place, Andrew advises having the dentures relined so they will fit better. As he points out, the money spent on denture adhesive over 12 months would easily cover the cost of having your dentures refitted. Denture South has been providing a full range of denture services for the residents of Christchurch for over 13 years. These services include first-time immediate

dentures, full replacement dentures, partial plates and sports mouth-guards. Many Denture South clients come through word-of-mouth referral, an indication of the level of satisfaction that’s provided there. Coming into Christmas we will be open and available for all adjustments for our existing patients in the final week, making for a great Christmas. The friendly Denture South team.

Conveniently located at 230 Barrington Street, Denture South has off-street parking. Phone 332-4004 for a complimentary consultation.
